site downtime

Well, the time has come to change providers, but I haven’t chosen one yet. That said, the website will be down for a while as I move to another provider for hosting, but that’s not going to help those who are tyring to visit that don’t see this message first :)

Depending on how long it takes me to make a decision, the site could be down for around a month. Hopefully then I can restore all these entries. Thanks for reading/visiting.

ch ch ch ch changes…

Lately, I can’t seem to go to bed before 1 am. I don’t know why. I suppose that’s the reason for this late night post.

For those that visit my site or utilize my rss feed some changes are going to come about. I’ve got all sorts of stuff in the works. No- it’s not my pyrotechnic plans, but that’s part of it, I’m talking about the site. I’ve got newsvine, del.icio.us, bloglines (still deciding) flickr pro and all other goodies that I wish to roll into my blog soon. My good friend Jeff has been providing hosting for me for a long time now, but has changed hosting solutions and can no longer support my site as well for no cost to me. That said, I’m considering two options. The first is to host my own site on my own box. The downside – lots of work for time I don’t have right now. I’m considering signing up with Dreamhost. They seem awesome and prepaid rates are really good for everything offered. I’m thinking about switching over to Wordpress, another blogging software. I’m also planning on lots of other things to finally put something into the site. I’ll be paying for it, so I have to make it worth my while. I’m not sure what to do yet, but rest assured I’ll be sharing a lot of my life in the area of pyrotehcnics on the site for all to enjoy as I approach my May group gathering/training/fireworks buy as well as the electronic ignition system I’m working on for this years 4th of July show. I’m stoked. It’ll be an amazing year. Well, it’s 1:00 and time for bed.

CSS book of my dreams?

I may have just found the CSS book of my dreams. Before I explain, I’d like to point out that I’ve always been looking for web design and css related books. While I rarely read them from cover to cover, these books provide tips and tidbits that I can always look back on. Plus, having a lot of web design books makes me look like someone that knows what they’re doing.

This miracle book I speak of is one that has recently been released. It’s CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions by
Andy Budd, Simon Collison, Cameron Moll

From the book’s website:

"While CSS is a relatively simple technology to learn, it is a difficult one to master. When you first start developing sites using CSS, you will come across all kinds of infuriating browser bugs and inconsistencies. It sometimes feels like there are a million and one different techniques to master, spread across a bewildering array of websites. The range of possibilities seems endless and makes for a steep and daunting learning curve."

After reading this sentence I thought to myself, "Wow! This is exactly the way I feel about CSS" So I downloaded the sample chapter on layout and the explanation finally made float layouts clear to me. Perhaps it’s the combination of other sources and this description that finally allowed me to see what’s going on. Anyway, I really like this book so far. That said, I’m going to buy a copy in a few days. Perhpas I’ll actually read this one all the way through.
